June 11, Monday

The boat has a sailor’s clock, which dings every half hour. Dana LOVES the clock. He loves it so much that he stayed up most of the night listening to it. We will need to find the silencer on the click until we get home! The four adults were up before the 5:30 a.m. alarm went off. Coffee was brewed, and lines were pulled and before 6:00 a.m. we were moving. It was very tricky getting out of the canal for the first ½ hour, but then it got easier. Dana asked Kip “So, basically, you know how to get us out of here?” Kip replied with “basically!” Kip unzipped the bridge window, and it was COLD. Suzy and Shelly recommended that they zip that baby back up. About 3 hours later, the guys agreed it was fine with the window zipped up (after a brief discussion earlier about buying gloves)!

The water is such a pretty shade of greenish blue here. We arrived at Port Huron about 9:00 a.m. to get gas. Where is Bob when you need him? Gas was $3.89! We filled up (gulp) and continued out to Lake Huron. The guys set up the autopilot, and away we went. We went 227 miles and Kip and Dana figure we got less than 1 mile per gallon. Yikes!

The girls were busy playing bingo and learning how to fold towel animals, until they decided to sleep. This picture is of swans!!!

Kip is a great captain and we are not having any problems (thanks to the boat too). Dana is navigating and keeping us on course. The girls had “towel folding” class and played a number of games of bingo, and then settled in playing at the table. The water was like glass. We arrived at Presque Isle and went to the store for forgotten items and ice cream.

The dock attendant told us about the haunted lighthouse down the beach. We walked the trail and went into the lighthouse. The woman working in the lighthouse told us the story about the phantom light that appears at dusk in the lighthouse which has not had electricity since the 1800s. The sci fi channel has a show called “Positive Proof” and they came out and taped for four days about the story. A cameraman said he actually saw the ghost after the door was slammed shut. The girls really got into it. When we went to the end of the pier, we did see the light. The girls wanted to go back at night to see the lighthouse again, so we took them. The trail was dark and the girls would not go up to the lighthouse because they were so scared. That is a story they will be telling for a long time.

Q: If a large boat travels west through the Great Lakes, then southwest down the Illinois River, then North up the Mississippi River, then how many bags of microwave popcorn will the captain need?

Have a great day!

Hello to the "Kips Ahoy II" It sounds like you guys are having a great time, I would like to see a Monkey created by the towel folding experts, they too look great with sun glasses on. Is there a refuelling ship that can pull up next to you to refill? Should I start parting out the "51" for additional gas money? Kip I got a report from DQ today and they are worried about going out of business since you are not stopping in :)

Have a great day!

One mile to the gallon?! Can you math wizards calculate for me the comparison between 82 degrees with 65% humidity compared to 105 degrees with 15% humidity? How many layers will I need?! Parka?

Seriously ... I'm looking forward to the trip and seeing you!

Love, Wendee

You must be traveling soon past the tip of Door County. Our Ames friends the Strommens have a cottage [that sleeps 10] across from Washington Island. Wave as you go by. We have stayed there twice and gots lots of salmon with the grandsons about where you are traveling. Our guide Stu has his boat docked at Gills Rock.

Love, Dianne and Fred
