It’s very strange on the big lakes. When you look at the water, it appears there is a black line in the horizon up ahead. It took us a while to figure out that it’s the wind blowing on certain parts of the water and it looks black on those areas.
Suzy and Shelly were making breakfast and the power went out. We thought that it was maybe the whole dock, so we put the generator on. After eating breakfast, we left Port Washington heading for Chicago. The girls are very excited.
We traveled about 70 miles and arrived at Belmont marina. The people working here are not the brightest bulbs on Christmas tree. They told us to go into slip 43, and there was no slip 43. Then they said it was 43, but it is labeled 00. When we got there, someone else’s ropes and shoes were on the dock. Kip asked them three times if they were sure we were supposed to be in this slip. They said yes, so we tied up.
Dana, Suzy and all of the girls took to take a taxi to Navy Pier. Then they took a trolley to Michigan Avenue to shop, took the subway to Wrigley Park and then walked back to the marina. Kip and Shelly stayed behind to do some maintenance on the boat (cleaning, etc.). Soon we hear a knock on our boat, and a very cranky young man said we were in his slip. Kip tried to explain the circumstances to him, and he wasn’t listening and was getting mad. They stomped up to the marina office, and we tried to call to straighten it all out. Anyway, we will be moving to the next slip down tomorrow. I’m still not sure what the big deal is, but whatever it takes, I guess.
Kip and Shelly met Dana, Suzy and kids at a pizza place called Renaldi’s Pizza after walking for quite a while. Nothing is close from the Belmont Marina to eating in Chicago. After pizza, we stopped and had an ice cream cone and then walked back to the boat. We all decided we like the small towns much better than the big towns.
There are only two bathrooms here, which is unusual due to the number of boats in the area. It is very hot, so the air is on and working great. Hopefully Shelly will learn to not hit her head in the v-bunk every day! Ouch.

Welcome Carlo, Rick and Wendee. You're about to have a once in a lifetime experience during the next week or two. Let us know when you plan to go past Davenport, Iowa (Quad Cities). Susan lives there and it would be fun to meet you there, tour the boat, and maybe have a picnic at Susan's.
Dianne and Fred
